Every journey off the island starts the same way, out along the A250 and over the Sheppey Crossing on the A249. After that the route depends on your airport. Gatwick and Heathrow are reached south of the Thames via the M20, M26 and M25, while Stansted, Luton and Southend all mean crossing the river at Dartford, which is where good timing makes the biggest difference.
