If you live on the Isle of Sheppey, every flight starts with the same question: drive yourself and park, get a lift, or book a taxi? Driving feels like the obvious choice because the car is already on the drive. But once you add up parking, fuel, crossing charges and the drive home after a long flight, a pre-booked airport taxi often makes more sense than people expect.
1. Airport parking adds up quickly
Official airport car parks are priced by the day, and the closer you park to the terminal, the more you pay. For a week or two away, parking can easily become one of the biggest costs of the trip, and that's before the shuttle bus from an off-site car park. A taxi fare from Sheerness is fixed when you book, whether you're away for three nights or three weeks.
2. Even a "quick drop-off" isn't free any more
Most of the large London airports now charge every vehicle that stops at the terminal forecourt. If a friend or relative drops you off, they pay that charge and then drive all the way back to Sheppey, and do the whole trip again to collect you. That's four long journeys instead of two.
3. The Dartford Crossing is part of the journey
From Sheppey, the routes to Stansted, Luton and Southend all cross the Thames at Dartford. The Dart Charge applies between 6am and 10pm and has to be paid online by midnight the following day, which is easy to forget at the end of a holiday. Queues at the crossing are also the biggest unknown in your journey time. Gatwick, Heathrow and London City are reached without it.
4. Nobody wants to drive home after a long-haul flight
The drive back from Heathrow is around 82 miles. After an overnight flight that's a long way to concentrate on the M25. With a taxi you can sleep, call home or simply look out of the window while someone else deals with the traffic.
5. It's simpler for families and groups
Suitcases, car seats, buggies and golf clubs don't all fit in a family hatchback. We can send an estate, a people carrier or a minibus for up to 8 passengers, and because the fare is per vehicle rather than per person, groups often find it the best-value way to travel.
When driving yourself still makes sense
To be fair, there are times when driving is the better option: a very short trip with cheap parking booked well in advance, or when you need your own car at the other end. The best way to decide is to compare the two. Check the parking price for your dates, add fuel and any crossing charges, then ask us for a fixed taxi price and see which comes out ahead.
Quick checklist
- Compare airport parking for your exact dates with a fixed taxi fare each way
- Remember forecourt drop-off charges if someone is giving you a lift
- Flying from Stansted, Luton or Southend? Allow for the Dartford Crossing
- Coming home after a long flight? Book your return pickup at the same time
