Living on Sheppey, you can reach six London airports, but they're not equal. Here's how they compare from Sheerness, so you can weigh up a cheaper flight against a longer journey.

London City: closest, best for business
The closest by road and the quickest through the terminal, thanks to its compact size. Flights are mostly short-haul and business routes, and fares can be higher.
Gatwick: the best all-rounder from Kent
Gatwick is usually the quickest major airport to reach from Sheppey because the route stays south of the Thames, with no river crossing. It has a huge range of holiday and short-haul flights from its two terminals, North and South.
Heathrow: for long-haul
The furthest of the big airports by road, but the place for long-haul flights and the widest choice of airlines. Allow extra time for the western M25.
Stansted, Luton and Southend: north of the Thames
All three mean crossing at Dartford. Stansted and Luton have lots of budget flights; Southend is small and easy once you're there, but by road it's further than it looks on the map. Always allow extra time for the crossing.
How to choose
- Early flight: Gatwick or London City, which avoid the Dartford Crossing
- Long-haul: Heathrow or Gatwick
- Cheapest flight: compare the total cost, including getting to the airport. A cheaper fare from Luton can cost more overall than a slightly dearer one from Gatwick
