If you drive from Kent to Essex or north of London, you'll use the Dartford Crossing: the tunnels northbound and the QEII Bridge southbound. It's a toll crossing, but there are no barriers.

How Dart Charge works

  • There are no toll booths: cameras record your number plate
  • You pay online, by phone or with a pre-pay account
  • You must pay by midnight the day after you cross, or you can get a penalty
  • There's no charge between 10pm and 6am

Which journeys from Sheppey use it

From Sheppey, journeys to Stansted, Luton and Southend airports, Essex, East Anglia and most of the Midlands and the North cross at Dartford. Gatwick, Heathrow, central London and the south coast don't.
