The Sheppey Crossing on the A249 is the island's main link to the mainland. When it's disrupted, journeys on and off Sheppey can take much longer.

Why it can close

Like any major bridge, it can be affected by incidents, roadworks and severe weather. When that happens, traffic is diverted, usually via the older Kingsferry Bridge, which is slower and can lift for shipping.

Planning important journeys

  • Check the traffic news before early flights and appointments
  • Allow extra time when strong winds are forecast
  • Book with a local firm that knows the alternatives

How we help

We keep an eye on the crossing and contact you if a booked journey is likely to be affected. For airport runs, we'll suggest an earlier pickup if needed. See Sheppey Crossing vs Kingsferry Bridge.
