In the UK, “taxi” covers two different types of licensed vehicle. Knowing the difference helps you travel safely.
Hackney carriages
Hackney carriages can be hailed in the street or picked up at a taxi rank. They're licensed by the local council and usually display a roof sign.
Private hire vehicles
Private hire vehicles must be booked in advance through a licensed operator, by phone, online or in an app. They can't pick up people who flag them down. Drivers, vehicles and operators are all licensed by the council.
Why it matters
- An unbooked private hire car offering you a lift is uninsured for that journey and unsafe
- Booking in advance means there's a record of your journey
- Check the car and driver match your booking
