Heathrow is one of the furthest London airports from Sheppey, and the M25 can be unpredictable. Here's how to work out when to leave.
The rule of thumb
Add together: the time you need at the airport (about 2 hours for short-haul, 3 for long-haul), the slower end of the typical drive time, and a 15-minute margin. Round up.
Short-haul flights
- Sheerness: typically 1 hr 35 – 2 hr, so leave about 4 hr 15 before departure
- Minster-on-Sea: typically 1 hr 30 – 1 hr 55, so leave about 4 hr 15 before departure
- Queenborough: typically 1 hr 30 – 1 hr 55, so leave about 4 hr 15 before departure
- Eastchurch: typically 1 hr 35 – 2 hr, so leave about 4 hr 15 before departure
- Leysdown-on-Sea: typically 1 hr 40 – 2 hr 5, so leave about 4 hr 30 before departure
- Sittingbourne: typically 1 hr 25 – 1 hr 50, so leave about 4 hr 15 before departure
Long-haul flights
- Sheerness: typically 1 hr 35 – 2 hr, so leave about 5 hr 15 before departure
- Minster-on-Sea: typically 1 hr 30 – 1 hr 55, so leave about 5 hr 15 before departure
- Queenborough: typically 1 hr 30 – 1 hr 55, so leave about 5 hr 15 before departure
- Eastchurch: typically 1 hr 35 – 2 hr, so leave about 5 hr 15 before departure
- Leysdown-on-Sea: typically 1 hr 40 – 2 hr 5, so leave about 5 hr 30 before departure
- Sittingbourne: typically 1 hr 25 – 1 hr 50, so leave about 5 hr 15 before departure
Worked example
For a 10:00 short-haul flight from Sheerness, leave about 4 hr 15 before, so around 05:45. Weekday rush hours on the M25 can add more, so we may suggest an earlier pickup.
